    Cravat

    Juni 2nd, 2015

A cravat is a plain strip of cloth, worn tied around the neck, which originated in men’s military uniforms in the 1630’s and is the forerunner of the modern neck tie. The original purpose of the cravat is still debated but it is thought to have been used to hide stains on shirts or as a psychological protection during battle, shielding the neck from injury. The cravat was worn by men and women for two centuries before it started to be referred to as a “tie”.

    Neck Tie

    März 30th, 2015

A neck tie is a decorative piece of fabric worn around the neck, partially covered by the shirts collar typically by men in a business or formal environment. The neck tie as it is worn today originated in the previously worn cravat which was a lose knotted piece of fabric also worn around the neck. One differs between neck ties and bow ties. While the neck tie covers the button tape, the bow tie only covers the first button of the shirt it is worn with. Today, neck ties are traditionally made of silk but are also produced in wool and cotton. There are specific social rules as when and how to wear a neck tie. They remain a crucial part of the business suit.

    Wrist Watch

    September 23rd, 2014

A wrist watch is a watch worn around the wrist, attached with decorative straps, chains or bracelets. It is the successor of the first portable watch – the pocket watch, which could be carried due to the use of mechanical springs. The wrist watch became popular in the late 16th century, soon after the pocket watch had been invented but at first was barely worn by men owing to its feminine perception. With the beginning of WWI function overpowered form and men began to wear wrist watches. While the pocket watch is rarely used today the wrist watch has stayed popular and is mostly a fashion item and a display of wealth.
