    Jeanne Paquin

    Jeanne Paquin, French fashion designer, lived from 1869–1936. She founded her namesake fashion house “House of Paquin” in 1891. It was the first fashion house founded by a woman. The French designer who was trained to be a dressmaker at the fashion house Rouff, designs 18th century inspired pastel evening gowns and day dresses which the Maison Paquin becomes famous for. Considered by many to be one of the first female couturiers, she also started organizing fashion events for the Maison Paquin such as races and operas. In 1920, Paquin left the fashion house and passed on the administration before the house closed down in 1956 due to financial difficulties. During its existence the fashion house grew to a very successful and the biggest fashion house in Paris, known for the vivid colors and extravagant furs Jeanne Paquin used, as well as luxurious lingerie and tango dresses.

    Jeremy Scott

    Jeremy Scott, American fashion designer, born in 1975 in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating his fashion design study from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, he kicked off his fashion career in the late 1990s for Paris Fashion Week by showing his Spring 2000 ready-to-wear collection. In 2008, Scott collaborated with German sportswear giant Adidas. Together they launched a collaboration collection of footwear and apparel by Scott. In October 2013, Jeremy Scott became Moschino’s Creative Director, debuting his first Moschino Collection in Fall 2014.

    Jeffrey New York

    Jeffrey, luxury retailer, founded 1999 by Jeffrey Kalinsky in New York. Jeffrey was one of the first retailers to open in New York’s now very fashionable Meatpacking District. The former Barney’s buyer wanted to offer high-end fashion that could be found in other luxury department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman or Barneys, but in a smaller, more concentrated, fun and unpretentious concept. Jeffrey offers on-trend luxury fashion for men and women with a focus on customer service and a fun shopping experience, which is created with a DJ, an open shopping space and without bothersome sales associates.

    Jacquard Jersey

    Jacquard jersey is a knitted fabric produced on a knitting machine with a double row of needles. The needles are operated individually so that gaps in between the mesh are created. This way various decorative patterns can be created. Jacquard jersey is used for dresses, jackets and sweaters.

    J. Mendel

    J. Mendel, French fashion label, founded 1870 in Paris by Joseph Breitman. J. Mendel is a family owned and managed New York based high luxury fashion brand. First known as a Parisian furrier catering to very wealthy Russian clientele, J. Mendel made a name for itself as one of the most luxurious fashion labels on the market. After altercations with PETA and other animal rights organizations J. Mendel started displaying ready-to-wear fashion in their windows to take the focus off of their use of fur. Today their ready-to-wear has expanded to be a crucial part of the business, yet J. Mendel is still most known for their exquisite furs.

    Just Cavalli

    Just Cavalli, Italian fashion label, founded 2001 by Roberto Cavalli. Just Cavalli is the secondary fashion line of Italian designer Roberto Cavalli to his high-end line “Roberto Cavalli”. It was renamed in 2001 “Cavalli Jeans”. The Just Cavalli line features mens and womenswear and is designed for a younger more casual customer with a focus on denim, inspired by the main line.

    Jersey

    Jersey is a soft, elastic, light and comfortable fabric that is made out of viscose, wool, cotton, silk or synthetic yarn. Jersey is most used for garments worn close to the skin such as underwear, t-shirts, women’s tops, dresses and for bed sheets. The name jersey comes from the channel island Jersey which was where jersey was first produced and which is until today one of the biggest exporters of jersey. Coco Chanel was the first in the fashion industry to use jersey for fashionable garments instead of just for underwear.

    Jen Kao

    Jen Kao, American fashion designer, born in Los Angeles, USA. Kao grew up in Los Angeles and moved to New York in 1999 to study at NYU and later fashion design at Parsons. Her namesake label ‘Jen Kao’ was founded in 2007 and consists or new interpretations of classic design for modern women. Kao is known for minimalistic details, innovative fabrics, geometric prints and straight silhouettes. She uses fine tailoring, draping and the manipulation of fabrics to generate a new perception of fashion. Kao has been awarded with various design awards such as the Harvard Leadership in the Arts Award and has been a member of the CFDA since 2011.

    Jewelry

    Jewelry is the word used for small objects often of materialistic or personal value worn on the body or clothes as embellishment. Typical jewelry is rings, brooches, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. The oldest jewelry found is over 100.000 years old and was made of shells.     Janina Alleyne

    Janina Alleyne, British footwear designer, based in London. Alleyne studied footwear design at DeMontfort University in Leicester before starting to create her own futuristic designs. Inspired by under water creatures and invertebrate animals she created her best known collection ‘Exoskeleton’ consisting of 3D printable, almost colorless high heels that are more beautiful and artistic than functional and practical. Her designs are more art than fashion and have won her different fashion design awards.
