    Rowley, Cynthia

    Cynthia Rowley, American Fashion Designer, born 1958 in Barrington. Rowleys earliest intentions were to become a painter, studying at the School of Art Institute Chicago. She was kicked out of the school for her designs being too over the top and moved to New York, where she designed her first fashion collection. She famously presented this collection in her own walk-up apartment and invited all famous editors, of which none came. Yet soon her extravagant designs attracted the press and buyers. Today, Rowley is internationally known with 60 own boutiques world-wide, her own book and appearances on various TV-Shows including Project Runway. Rowleys brand offers womenswear, menswear, accessories, handbags and cosmetics. Her vintage-inspired designs are playful yet sophisticated in bright colors.

    Rachel Comey

    Rachel Comey, American Fashion Designer, born in Hartford. The designer started her career in fashion as a costume designer for downtown New York music bands. Soon after moving to New York, she founded her eponymous label with a menswear line. The brand soon became popular and was expanded by adding a womenswear and footwear line, which created a loyal following especial amongst the city’s creative elite. Comeys designs are known for custom textiles, modern, graceful silhouettes and beautiful footwear and are aimed towards „real“ and ambitious women. The garments are produced in New York, Spain, Portugal and Peru and are sold world-wide in over 100 high-end fashion boutiques and the labels mono-brand store in New Yorks Soho. Comey is a member of the CFDA.

    Roberto Capucci

    Roberto Capucci, Italian fashion designer, born 1930 in Rome. After studying at the Accademia di Belli Arti, Capucci started designing his first collection, while working for a business man, who planned to feature Capucci’s designs in a fashion show he was organizing. Even though the designs were not shown at the fashion show, Capucci soon became known in Italian fashion. He opened his first atelier in 1950 and soon after was considered one of the best Italian designers. Especially the French couturier Christian Dior admired his work. Capucci was called the “Givenchy of Rome” and the “boy wonder”. Capucci is known for his sculptural dresses, using unusual materials and creating shapes around the wearer’s body. He also mixed rich an poor materials to create interesting contrasts. His designs were admired by many and Capucci received many design awards over the time.

    Rope Yarn

    Rope yarn is yarn made of loosely twisted fibers, that is used to make rope. Ropes can be decorative elements or functional such as the handle of a handbag. When the rope is functional the rope yarn needs to be more sturdy and made of strong fibers.

    Ribbing Knitting

    Ribbing knitting is a style of knitting that creates a fabric with alternating elevated and submerged vertical rows of knit fabric. Ribbed fabric has a structural elasticity, which is why it is commonly used on cuffs, hems and other pieces of a garment that should be close fitting.

    Raffles University

    Raffles University, founded 1990 by Vinod Kumar Gomber in Singapore. The fairly young Raffles University has experienced great growth in the past years. The university aims to create future business leaders in the fields of legal practice, science industry and commerce. At 30 colleges spread over 13 countries design and business related programs are offered and are taught by a faculty consisting of industry professionals. The first Raffles Design Institute was established in 2002 in Guangzhou.

    Ryerson University School Of Fashion

    Ryerson University, founded 1948 in Toronto by Howard H. Kerr. RU is Canada’s top vocational university with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Offering over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, RU currently has close to 40,000 enrolled students on three campuses in Toronto. Part of RU is the Fashion School, which prepares students for a successful career in the fashion business. After a first year of foundational studies, the students are divided into fashion communication and fashion design with further specializations along the way. The school supports young entrepreneurs in their start-up businesses.

    Royal Melbourne Institute Of Technology

    Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, founded 1887 in Melbourne by Hon Francis Ormond. The RMIT was originally founded as the Working Men’s College of Melbourne, offering night classes in art, science and technology during the industrialization in Australia in the 19th century. After WWII the university was supported by Queen Elizabeth II and was renamed and received its royal title. The university is divided into the college of business, the college of design and social context and the college of science, engineering and health. It is spread out over four campuses in Australia and three more in Asia and Europe with over 82,000 enrolled students. RMIT is known for their focus on hands-on experience and partnerships with the industry and the government. It is Australia’s top design school and has been voted number 304th best university worldwide. Fashion designers such as Peter Alexander, Jenny Bannister and Linda Britten have graduated from RMIT.

    Right-Hand Knitting

    Right-hand knitting, also known as English knitting is a common type of knitting, where the yarn to be knit is led with the right hand. The knitted fabric is very similar to fabrics produced with continental knitting. The stitches are not twisted which makes it somewhat looser than continental knit fabrics.

    Riccardi

    Riccardi, fashion retailer, founded 1978 by Riccardo Dallai in Boston. When Dallai first moved to Boston from Florence, Italy in the 1970’s, the city had little to do with European fashion. Dallai saw potential in Boston and opened a men’s and womenswear store on Boston’s trendy Newbury Street. Here he started selling Italian designer fashion brands such as John Galliano, Prada, Comme des Garcons as well as jeans and sportswear labels and became very popular amongst Boston’s fashion savvy crowd. Dallai’s sense for fashion trends and consistently up-to-date inventory have made him one of the most sought after fashion retailers in Boston.
