Acrylic is a synthetic man-made fiber that is produced chemically and is used in fashion mostly as a substitute for wool. Acrylic was first created in 1941 and became popular in the 1950’s. The fiber is cheaper than wool, stronger, holds color better, is very warm, soft, light and dries fast. It therefore is used for sweaters, hats, scarves and lining for gloves and boots. Acrylic is considered cheap, because it is often used as an alternative to soft, more expensive natural fibers such as cashmere and mohair.
