Atelier is the French word for ‘workshop’ and is used to describe the room a photographer, sculptor, designer or any creative artist works in. Ateliers as we know them today were first used in the Middle Ages and were common in North America and Western Europe. In the past ateliers were also used to teach students of the fine arts from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Ateliers are usually on the top floor of buildings and houses for better lighting and have windows pointed towards the North for constant lighting.
