A cardigan is a garment much like a sweater or jersey but with buttons or zippers down the front. It’s a unisex fashion piece, worn by both genders. The cardigan was named after James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British military commander of the mid 1850s. Todays cardigans are designed like the knitted waistcoat Brudenell’s soldiers supposedly wore back in the day.
