    Cartridge Pleats

Cartridge pleats are named after cartridge loops on military belts due to their resemblance. In fashion they are used to tuck a large amount of fabric into a small waistband without adding bulk to the seam. Cartridge pleats were heavily fashionable during the 1800s for the purpose of gathering skirts in particular as well as to attach the then very popular full bell-shaped skirt to the womens waist.
