A collar of a dress, shirt or blouse is the part of the garment that fits around the neck and is often folded over. Different from other necklines such as lapels or a revers the collar is a separate piece of fabric attached to the garment and in some cases is detachable. The origin of collars is in the ruffle neck of medieval chemises. There are stand-up collars that fit around the neck and do not lay on the shoulders, turn-over collars that stand around the neck and then are folded or rolled, and flat collars that lay on the shoulders. Collars can be stiffened with starch. In case they are not stiffened, they are called a soft collar. Also look at: stiff collar, soft collar, shirt collar, waterfall collar etc.
