An earring is a piece of jewelry that is worn pierced or clipped to the ear. Most earrings are attached to the earlobe, but can also be attached to almost any other part of the ear. Earrings can be made of nearly any material such as metal, glass, stone, beads, wood and plastic and there are many different styles of earings such as hoops, studs or plates. Ear piercing is one of the oldest body modifications known. They were first worn by wealthy men of ancient Persia and became very popular amongst European sailors in the 15th century. For sailors wearing an earring was a symbol that showed they had sailed around the world and crossed the equator. In the 1960s earrings were worn again by hippies and gay men. Since then musicians have been keeping the trend alive.
