Elie Tahari
The American luxury fashion designer Elie Tahari (born in 1952 in Jerusalem) of men and women’s clothing was one of the first fashion designer to open a boutique on Madison Avenue in New York, in 1974. The Jerusalem immigrant sought work in Manhattan’s garment district, had no money and was sleeping often in YMCA Hotels or on the benches in Central Park. After finding a job as a sales clerk at a boutique he was introduced to women’s fashion and began designing clothes on his own inspired by the New York nightclub scene. In 1974 he opend his first boutique in New York and in the 1980s, Tahari turned his focus to the tailored suit. Today Tahari has beside New York boutiques in Boston, East Hampton, Atlanta, Bal Harbour, Boca Raton, and Las Vegas. Elie Tahari sold his share of the business in 2003 and is no longer involved in the company.
