Espadrilles are shoes that have been worn since they were first seen in the 14th century in the Pyrenees and are traditionally made of a canvas shoe with a braided cord sole made of rope. The word ‘Espadrilles’ comes from the word ‘Esparto’ which is tough Mediterranean grass that can be used to make rope. Espadrilles used to be worn in Catalania by peasants but now are also made by high end designers in different colors and materials such as leather or lace.
