The slang word “flapper” or “flap” used to mean a young woman, is commonly supposed to be a reference to a young bird flapping its wings while learning to fly. The word coming from nothern England means in other words “teenage girl” or from an older word meaning “prostitute” as far back as 1631. In the 1920s “flapper” was a term applied to a “new breed” of young Western women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair and listened to jazz.
