    Frock Coat

A frock coat is a knee-length men’s coat that has been popular, and at times indispensable since the 17th century. It developed as a successor to the French Justacorps in England and France and became popular when parts of the German and Hungarian army started wearing them in the Napoleonic Wars over their uniforms for warmth and protection from dirt. The frock coat for a long time was essential formal wear but started to decline in the 20th century before it finally died as a part of typical menswear in the 1930’s. Today, frock coats are almost limited to the military, orthodox Jews and in the hotel business.
