    Galleries Lafayette

Galleries Lafayette, French retailer, founded in 1895 by Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn. Starting off under the name ‘Aux Galleries Lafayette’ the department store used to be a small haberdashery selling sewing articles close to the Opera in Paris. The location on La Fayette Street, near the Opera and train station accounted for their early success. The brand hires architects to redesign the store and make it a real department store, known for it’s colorful dome glass roof. They also start producing and selling their own fashion and later jewelry, accessories, home furnishing and beauty products, which attracts the working women, who would go shopping during their lunch breaks. The Galleries Lafayette attracted high society women and working class women equally and developed to be a Paris fashion institution, that later branched out internationally but is keeping its flagship store in Paris.
