    Grain Line

On a woven fabric the grain line is the direction of the long-wise threads, the warp in a piece of fabric that runs parallel to the weaving edge of the fabric. If a piece of fabric does not have a weaving edge or a distinctive pattern it is often close to impossible to detect the grain line of the flat piece of fabric. Though hardly detectable in a piece of flat fabric the grain line strongly influences the way a garment drapes and stretches and is therefore very important for the production of clothes. Garments sewn far off the grain line can twist and stretch out lengthwise.
