    Petticoat

Petticoat is the standard name in English for any “underskirt” worn as part of non-Western clothing.  It is an undergarment to be worn under a dress or a skirt. The petticoat is also a separate garment hanging from the waist. In the sixteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries, petticoats refers to any separate skirt worn with a bodice, gown, bedgown or jacket. They are not speaking underwear as they were made to be seen. Petticoats were in the past and are now on one hand refers to a skirt like undergarments worn for warmth and one the other hand to give the skirt or dress the desired fashionable shape.
