A poncho is a functional garment made of one piece of fabric with a hole in the middle for the head of the wearer. Ponchos are made for protection against cold, wind and water and therefore also often feature a hood or piece of fabric covering the head. Some ponchos have closures on both sides to join the fabric and add protection against wind. They were first commonly worn by the Paracas in Peru about 500BC and have since been worn in and been associated with South America. Today ponchos are made as fashionable, less functional garments with knitted wool that is breathable and light yet warm.
