    Side hoop

A ’side hoop’ is a synonym for “pannier” which is a women’s undergarment worn in the eighteenth century to extend the width of the skirt at the side while leaving the front and back flat. The style originated in Spanish court dress of the seventeenth century. The fashion spread to France and then to the rest of Europe after approximately 1718-1719. By the 1780s, side hoops were normally worn only to very formal evening gowns and within court fashion.
