A tie is a long slim strip of fabric that is tied around the collar of a shirt and is closed in a tie knot in the front, covering the buttons of the shirt. It is an alternated form of the bow tie and was first worn in the 17th century by the high society. Ties can be made of many fabrics such as cotton, silk, polyester, wool and leather in different colors and patterns. Next to the color, the knot is the most important part of a tie with over 180 variations of tying it. The width of a tie is determined by the current trend. Ties today are worn for business and formal events or as a fashion statement. Some ties are worn for identification of different groups such as schools or clubs especially in England.
