Fashion History Classics: Who invented the Marilyn Dress?
Who doesn’t know the famous scene of the film ‘Seven Year Itch’ (filmed in 1955 at the corner of Lexington Avenue & 52nd Street in New York) where Marilyn Monroe has been shown standing over a subway grate while wearing a beautiful, billowing, white neck-holder dress?
Due to the blast from the subway vent, her gathered skirt is blown up and reveals her sexy legs. That ‘Marilyn-Dress’ went down in history after seeing it on her in the movies. The so-called neck-holder dress has a single strap around the back of the neck and it is generally either strapless or of halterneck construction itself, as to avoid exposing the back straps of a typical bra. Discovered and introduced to the public in 1955 by Marilyn Monroe but worn until now. The Marilyn-Dress became one of an important item in the fashion history and always will be.
