Fashion History Classics: Who invented the Twin Set?

A sweater with a matching cardigan all made with the same fabric and color was more a boring invention in 1934. Fashion designer Otto Weisz invented the twin-set for the knitwear label Pringle of Scotland back then. During the 1950s and 1960s twin-sets have been associated most closely with women’s work wardrobes, particularly in secretarial work or teaching, but were occasionally viewed as too casual for more conservative workplaces where dress suits were preferred.

Nevertheless, the twin-set popularity mounted since Hollywood stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly were frequently wearing them on and off the set. Today it is still a keepsake of the conservative 50s and every so often still shown in different designer collections nowadays.
