‘Appliqué’ is the French word for ‘applied’ and in fashion is the name for small ornaments or decorations applied to another surface. Appliqués usually are made by cutting pieces from one material and sewing them to the surface of a garment. The first appliqués were seen in form of patches to cover holes and tears in clothes. They can be used to create a design, pattern or picture. Appliqués are used excessively in quilting which is a mixture of patchwork and appliqués.
