    Stiff Collar

    September 27th, 2013

A stiff collar is a collar that is reinforced or stiffened to make it stand up higher and therefore look more formal. Collars can be stiffened with starch, a stiff layer of extra fabric in between the two outer layers of the collar or collar stays. Collar stays are strips of metal, wood or plastic that are rounded on one end and pointed on the other to perfectly fit specially stitched pockets on the underside of a shirt’s collar. Collar stays can be sewn into the collar or removable. A stiff collar looks more elegant than a soft collar and is worn to formal events or with a business suit.

This is usually also where the first button of the garment is located. On a standard-break collar the first button of a men’s shirt is located 1-2 inches above the collarbone.

    Waterfall Collar

    Juni 21st, 2013

A waterfall collar is a collar found on jackets, blouses and cardigans that is draped from the neck and “falls” to the bottom of the garment. The collar is made with more fabric than necessary resulting in overlapping and draping of the fabric and gives this collar it’s name and can make it look like the wearer is wearing a shawl or scarf. Garments with a waterfall collar may have a belt but usually do not have any other kind of closure.

    Collar

    Juni 21st, 2013

A collar of a dress, shirt or blouse is the part of the garment that fits around the neck and is often folded over. Different from other necklines such as lapels or a revers the collar is a separate piece of fabric attached to the garment and in some cases is detachable. The origin of collars is in the ruffle neck of medieval chemises. There are stand-up collars that fit around the neck and do not lay on the shoulders, turn-over collars that stand around the neck and then are folded or rolled, and flat collars that lay on the shoulders. Collars can be stiffened with starch. In case they are not stiffened, they are called a soft collar. Also look at: stiff collar, soft collar, shirt collar, waterfall collar etc.
