In case you are missing one of your favorites or would love to dive deeper into the realm of footwear a bit deeper, check out FAD – The Ultimate Fashion Dictionary. Our very own iPhone Fashion App lists all notable kinds of footwear in great detail.

    1_Over-the-knee Boot

Over-the-knee boots cover the entire foot, calf and knee of the wearer. After firearms were invented in the 15th century men stopped wearing suits of armor and needed to find a new way to protect their legs when horseback riding. Over-the-knee boots were invented which were made of leather and therefore much lighter but still good protecting the wearer. Over-the-knee boots stayed popular for men from the 15th to the 19th century. In the 1960s, they were re-introduced to the fashion world by Cristobal Balenciaga as a women’s boot. He started to make over-the-knee boots part of his fashion shows and soon those boots were designed by many different designers in different colors, materials and designs. The fact that skirts were getting shorter in the 1960s also helped over-the-knee boots to gain popularity.

    2_Peep-toe Pump

Peep-toe pumps are women’s shoes with a small opening in the toe box of the shoe which makes some of the toes visible. The opening is usually wedge or round shaped and shows some toes but not the entire toe line as in open-toed shoes. Peep-toe pumps became very popular in the early 1940s but disappeared in the 1960. ‘Peep-toes’ as they are commonly called have regained popularity in the last couple of years though.

    3_Sneakers

Sneakers or tennis shoes are sports shoes that are made of canvas or leather with a rubber sole and are worn for recreation, as a casual shoe or as a fashion item. The name sneaker comes from the fact that the rubber soles are very quiet compared to the loud sound of hard leather soles of dress shoes. The first sneakers were produces in the 1860s in England for cricket. Later in 1919, Converse introduced sneakers as we know them today to the US and they have been a part of America’s Hip-Hop and Rock and Roll culture since.

    4_Wedge Shoe

Wedge shoes, also known as ‘wedges’ or ‘wedge heels’ are shoes that have a heel in form of a wedge, which means the sole and the heel are made of the same piece of material. First worn in ancient Greece wedge shoes became popular in modern Europe when Salvatore Ferragamo showed them in his fashion shows in the 1930s. Wedge heels do not necessarily have to have a high heel as there are also flat wedge shoes. Wedge shoes are mostly worn by women but men’s versions of wedge heels have been designed lately.

    5_Loafers

Loafers are low flat-heeled slip on shoes inspired by Native American moccasins. Loafers were first seen in the 1930s worn by Swedish men as a casual shoe. Imported to the US, loafers gained much popularity and American business men started wearing them as slightly more casual dress shoes. Now there are different variations of loafers in different colors and materials, with tassels and metal decorations and are also worn by some women, though the majority is still worn by men.

    High Heels

    Juni 21st, 2013

High heels are shoes that have an elevated heel that is between 10cm and 14cm high and therefore makes the wearer look taller and slimmer. High heels force the woman wearing them to walk on her tip toes, changes her posture and make her hips move more when walking which makes her looks sexier. Wearing high heels originates in the “patten shoes” which were first introduced by medieval Europeans. A short heel was added to shoes to make riding with stirrups more comfortable and soon “patten shoes” were worn by royalty in every day life for a taller appearance. Since WWII high heels have gone in and out of fashion. They are not practical, but esthetic and show off a woman’s sexuality.
