    Toe Socks

    Juni 21st, 2013

Toe socks are socks that have separate compartments for each toe. They are also known as 5-toe socks or finger socks as they look similar to finger gloves. The earliest kind of toe socks were worn in the 16th century by the Japanese. They needed a special kind of sock that had one compartment for the big toe and one for the rest of the toes in order to be able to wear their ‘geta sandals’. The first pair of toe socks as we know them today was designed by Ethel Russel in 1969 who designed what he called ‘glove socks’. In the 1970s they became very popular for girls, worn in flip flops or clogs to keep the feet warm. Typically they were knee high and had metallic threads worked in and were sold in all colors.

    Knee-highs

    Juni 21st, 2013

Knee-highs are a type of socks or stockings that reach up to or right under the knee and cover up the lower legs and feet. Stockings are mostly worn by women in western society and are different from socks as they are made of nylon or other stocking fabric. They became very popular with the invention of the mini skirt and were worn in many different colors, designs and transparencies. Knee-highs are worn to keep the lower legs and feet warm under a skirt or in boots to catch sweat.

    Socks

    Juni 21st, 2013

Socks are a short type of woven or knit stocking that reach a point between the ankle and the knee and are worn directly on the skin. Socks are worn for warmth, to keep the foot and shoe clean and to hide the ankle between the shoe and the hemline. The name “sock” comes from the word “soccus” which was the name for a loose fitting slipper in Latin. The earliest socks were found in the 8th century BC made of animal skin that was wrapped around the foot and ankle. Romans used leather and cloth to wrap around their feet and in the middle ages socks were a sign of wealth. In 1589 the sewing machine was invented, sped up the production and made them more popular. Now socks are made of various fabrics, in different colors and designs.
