“Hose” was the term in the Middle Ages through the 17th century for any kind of garment covering a man’s lower body or legs. Later these were called breeches and stockings and are referred to as pants today. The trunk hose was worn in the 16th and 17th century. Thigh-high Stockings

    Juni 21st, 2013

Thigh-high stocking is the American English word for hold-ups. They are a type of stockings that are not held up by a garter or a garter belt but by elastic or sticky material that is sewn into the top part of the hold-ups. Hold-ups were first made of silk but only became largely popular when nylon was invented which made the production of hold-ups cheaper. The invention of the mini skirt helped hold-ups gain large popularity in the 1960s. Hold-ups can either be produced on a circular machine which leaves them seamless but can also be made with a flat knitting machine which includes a seam and is usually more expensive.

    Stockings

    Juni 21st, 2013

Stockings are a type of close fitting undergarment for women that covers the foot and leg and is made from nylon, silk, cotton or similar materials that have elastic features. Stockings were woven until the sewing machine was invented in 1589 and made production easier and therefore more popular for the general public. Before the 1920s, stocking were worn for comfort and warmth but as the hemlines of women’s dresses rose were needed to cover women’s legs. Stockings are different from pantyhose in the fact that they are two pieces worn separately on both legs and are held up not by panties but by either a garter, garter belt or a non-slip lining inside the top of the stocking.

    Juni 21st, 2013

Tights are a type of garment that is worn tightly on the body to cover from the waist or neck down for women or girls and are worn instead of stockings. Tights are one piece and usually made of nylon, cotton or lycra. They were first worn by men who were horseback riding and wanted to protect their legs from scratches. Men of high class had tights made for them in silk or fine wool for more comfort. The difference between tights and pantyhose is the thickness, which is defined in denier. If tights are footless they are called leggings.
