    Hat

    ‘Hat’ is the generic clause for any kind of head-covering. It has been worn as a symbol of status, for religious purposes or as a fashion item throughout history. In the olden days hats where often used to show off a particular social status. The Cylinder Hat for instance was only worn by the upper class right around the turn of the 20th century.

    A cylinder hat, aka Top Hat, Silk Hat, Chimney Pot Hat, Stove Pipe Hat, sometimes even nicknamed as “Topper” is a tall, flat-crowned, broad-brimmed hat, predominantly worn from the latter part of the 18th to the middle of the 20th century. The first silk top hat in England is credited to George Dunnage, a hatter from Middlesex, in 1793 despite William Hogarth, the Lord Mayor of London was wearing a top hat back in 1747.     A ‘Topper’ is a tall hat with narrow brim, worn in the 18th to the 20th century. The first high-crowned silk hat in England was introduced by George Dunnage in 1793 and is simply known as a Cylinder Hat, aka Top Hat, Silk Hat, Chimney Pot Hat, and Stove Pipe Hat and made of silk fabric, mostly shinny or beaver cloth. Now, the topper is usually only worn in combination with a morning dress or white tie, in dressage, as servants’ workwear, doormen’s livery, or as a fashion statement.
